Not-So-Lonesome Runner

Lately I've had the urge to run by myself. I run almost everyday with a partner, but I really just want to run alone lately. Some days I run twice, but I still can't get away from buddy-run on the second run because I will go with Anne in the morning and then later in the evening Kerri will call to run. Neither of them are training for anything specific, so I can't always get in the kind of quality run I want to. I'm specifically training for my cross country season and I just want to train by myself for most days of the week. I want to be able to go my own route, my own pace, my own distance, but I can't when I'm running with a partner everyday. I really need to be putting in more distance, but I'm finding it hard to do. I just can't say no to people.

I do need to somehow break away from the buddies, because now that I'm getting into mid-July I should be upping the mileage quite a bit. My goal for June was mostly just to maintain my fitness, but I can't stick with only doing 25-30 miles per week. Any suggestions for telling my pals I'm craving some solo runs?

Schedule 3 quality runs a week that are non-negotiable. These will be your runs. If someone calls up to run with you during one of these pre-scheduled times, you need to tell them that you're already busy that time. And pick another time to run with them. If you can get in these 3 runs each week where you running the distance you need and the pace you need for your training, you can fill in the rest of your week with partner runs.

Finding a balance between running with your friends and getting in your training runs is important. Good luck with your training.

Last summer, I went to my high school team's captains practice a few times a week. They were doing about half the weekly mileage I was. Most of their runs were 3-6 miles so I'd run that with them and then just keep going. It was nice because it prevented me from going too fast at the beginning of the run like I sometimes do when I run alone. Hopefully your friends would not be too offended if you added on some more miles at the end.
